1 101 X Described in the 'Discourses of the Warring States', this period saw the emergence of just a few powerful states, such as Wei. The two major powers were Qin and Chu. Despite the constant fighting, this was also a time of philosophical development and artistic florescence, improvements in agricultural methods underlying major increases in population, and there was a great expansion in trade.

7 101 X Linzi was the capital of the north-eastern state of Qi. In the later part of the Warring States period important changes occurred in the layout of cities. At Qi the non-aristocratic residential and commercial quarters were enclosed by their own wall, a privilege previously reserved for the elite classes. As trade increased, market areas developed in the streets.

8 101 X Handan was the capital of the state of Zhao from 386 BC. Palaces built on pounded earth platforms were enclosed by city walls which remain to a height of 26 ft (8 m). Burials were often accompanied by human sacrifices. Unusually outside the state of Zhao, potsherds were inscribed and bore the impressions of personal seals.
